Born in Makassar and raised by his seamstress single mother, Toton Januar developed a passion for design at a young age.

He relocated to Jakarta, obtaining a degree in Media Broadcasting while working as a designer for one of Indonesia’s most prominent fashion designers.

The job, along with his modeling career, played an important role in shaping his early views on fashion and art in general-Indonesia‘s in particular.

He further sought to broaden his fashion knowledge by moving to New York, taking a course on Fashion Study at Parsons New School of Design.

He started TOTON the label to provide an answer to the modern women’s need of individual style.

TOTON Fall/Winter 2015

Drawing inspirations from spiritual facets of Indonesia’s culture, the collection explores humanity’s effort to connect with The Transcendent.

Batik Tumpal Motifs from Central Java reworked as abstract print, cutouts and embroideries informed by highly symbolic Dayak Tattoo Patterns, with references to monasticism in silhouettes and Balinese woodcarvings on the accessories, form a contemplation that is TOTON FW15.

A modern concept applying ancient techniques in a different perspective.  Colors were very subtle tones of ocean blue, and gray.

An over sized coat with waist band belt emphasizes the contouring of the fabric.

Great embroidery and tribal touches give this look a very unique approach to the season.

Another oversized jacket paired with metallic embroidered leggings.  A stylistic choice that seemed very adequate for the occasion.

The earth tone conveyed by the jacked was broken and integrated with the metallic silver tones of the embroidery and the over-sized buttons.   A great use of juxtaposition of different textiles and tones.

Using a full spectrum of elements the collection took place and it allowed us to experience the fashion of some Indonesian based fashion creatives.

At times it evoked a quick glimpse into the traditional by the use of the printed fabric but quickly it allocate our attention to the modern women that choses to integrate a variety of cultural influences into the daily wear.  A brand with a presence, it shows us an evolving concept by a great young designer, Toton Januar.

Wide leg pants in a light gray tone with a long sleeve blouse with a swirly brocade.

Sleek and classy for the modern women on the go.  Not too dressy, not too simple. The perfect outfit to showcase on a night out.

The right amount of vibrancy for a look to not be missed. A timeless combination for the sophisticated woman that loves to dress in a comfortable yet elegant fashion.

Another view of the detailing and accessorizing for this collection.

Tribal belts were such a hit, we can’t wait to get our hands on one of those exquisite belts.

Red accents for both pants and dress attire for a more subtle look.

Leggings with a 3-D pattern, a cut out detailing around the skirt and a intricate organic pattern white blouse made this look.Toton Januar collection presented at MBFW Tokyo, image by Akin Abayomi for Livingfash media
